Carrier Bags

The Government bring in a charge for carrier bags to limit the bags on . Landfills which today they have stated since the introduction of the 5p charge there has been a drop by 85% (6 Billion less bags)But our council has just sent us all letters telling us not to use black bags but to use carrier bags (Because Black bags wont fit into the chutes)How stupid..

If you have a large general waste bin in the kitchen it doesn't encourage and help you to separate your recycling out.  In fact it is the opposite. If you use a waste paper basket (as in the old days) for paper and card you can empty that when it is full. It is also worth flattening all cans, boxes and cartons so that you reduce the volume of your waste.However it is the food waste separation that can help you to choose to tweak the way that you buy fresh food because  in seeing what you waste you will be able to slightly change what you are doing.  (Freezing a sliced loaf or half a sliced loaf is one very successful tip I was given.  You can make toast straight from the freezer.)

Hello SimonHas anybody been provided with food waste bins?  Or does anybody use a food waste caddy to separate their food waste from the rest of their waste so that they can see what they are throwing away and help them to waste less and save money?It also makes it much easier too if you have all the potentially messy and smelly waste in one place and if it isn't being collected separately from the bins you only have a small amount of potentially problematic kitchen waste to wrap well before disposal down a chute. Hi Phillipa  Yes there is recycling bins on the estate but there is 2 issues around recycling:1. The bin's are not being emptied every week like they are supposed to do and they get full up very quickly.2. Some residents are lazy and wont recycle when they can use the chutes.

Well I agree with you Simon it is ridiculous and I suggest that whoever it was that wrote out that letter should go on a Rubbish Diet.www.therubbishdiet.org.ukYou don't want to be buying special bags to send your rubbish down the chute if you can help it.  I'm surprised that there isn't any communal recycling.  There is on a lot of estates.  There also tends to be a lot of problems with people dumping stuff - particularly builders' waste.http://www.islington.gov.uk/services/rubbish-recycling/recycle/recycle-at-home/household-recycling/Pages/Estate-recycling-sites.aspxMaybe you could arrange for someone from The Rubbish Diet and/or somebody from the West London Waste Authority to visit your estate to give a talk.

They wont allow residents access to the bin room areas downstairs to use the bin's hence having to use the chutes./

I think it is daft to pressure people on the ground, so to speak, to recycle and yet there are rubbish chutes on the high rises.  Don't they have lifts?  Why would you not consider the recycling options in a high rise?  You could provide them with coloured bags so they could separate their rubbish out and then chuck it down the chute, I suppose.

Yes, I've no doubt they did - that's Hounslow for you. I was merely saying that instead of taking any notice of them pedal bin liners are as good if you no longer keep paying for carrier bags in shops.

Sounds about right! You can buy cheap pedal bin liners at Lidl which would serve the purpose.
