Another example I know of where the British legion came forward ..A man I was interviewing through work had gone his entire life without crossing paths with the law. Long term unemployed he was being asked to change the way he had been balancing his money and pay towards his Council Tax. He just couldn't do so, and at 58 years old was being taken to court by the council, who were going to add fines and costs to his situation without a care. He asked my advice about going to court and said he had written a poem for the magistrates, should he read it or give it to them?I had many conversations with the person at the Council so I know they didn't care, and that he was just going to be a 'Tick' in their box for reclaiming a debt. It wouldn't have taken much to have discussed his finances with him, seen he was genuine and worked out another way.A lady I worked with had contacts with the Legion and through her he had a case worker who visited him with a small bottle of something for a winters day, and they gave him the outstanding sum, minus £20 or so, for him to find. The man from the council relented and the original sum was paid off without the extra fees and no need for the poem.
