Calling a spade, a spade

Advert outside Tesco - "Recruiting seasonal colleagues" - translation - Christmas temporary staff. Why oh why! can't these people say what they mean?

I'd guess the problem was that 'Christmas' contains 'Christ'. Reminds me of when Parliament introduced abuse filters and the MP for Scunthorpe suddenly found he was getting no emails at all.

I get what you are saying Vanessa, but Christmas is not an acceptable term so couldn't be used.  Happy holidays, in advance, by the way ..... ;) x

I wasn't making a point about whether or not Christmas is an acceptable term or not. It's this double-speak nonsense that gets me - today I received an e-mail that referred to local people as 'resident stakeholders', it's such a load of old nonsense like people being given ridiculous job titles, like 'refuse operative' instead of road sweeper for instance. Can't we just call things what they really are?

The on line application 'rejected' on the basis my password contained a 'prohibited term'....

Could that be because it is too common a choice? Only asking. One way to find out whether any thing else is at play would be to see whether Jehovah and other such words are rejected.

I tried to use 'Christmas' as a password on an NHS web site and it was rejected.
