'On the news last night they said that A&E departments estimated that a third of people who attend don't need to be there, so why not tell these time wasters to go away once it's established that they don't need urgent treatment?'A couple of years ago, I had to take someone who was terminally ill to A&E a few times. On one occasion, the man at the next desk on check-in was complaining of a cough. When the staff member asked how long he had had it, he replied 'Oh, about six months'. And yet it apparently had to be dealt with as an emergency on a Saturday night!
