Help Needed

Can anyone help in the research of the background of my wife's father.My wife is Barbara (nee Hutchinson), born at 3 Bedford Road Brentford. She attended St Georges School (approx 1948-1954).Her father was abandoned in (Pottery Road area)Brentford in 1912, approximately 2 years old, (we think his family name was Ebsworth,and was adopted by Charles Hutchinson and his wife.We now live in Australia but are having difficulty accessing records.  If there is anyone out there who can shed some light on this mystery we would be most grateful.Regards Charles and Barbara Ottewill

RichardRE Reginald Ebsworth, we know the names of his parents, brothers and sisters also where he was born. I will try to find out more of his marridge as you suggested via his parents. We have tried many avenues before but without his wifes name all dead ends so I will give 1837 online a try.In the 1910 census USA he was widowed did he marry an american? One of the paper clippings said he was a ships steward so he could have been working his passage back to England with children? we tried ships records but them days they only kept records of officers and passengers.His attempted suicide must have been in Essex because he was held in East Ham police station, so Brentford or Brentwood? We have been touch with the archives dept., Scotland Yard but know Records.Tried many web sites rootesweb, ancestry, family search, parish records and many more but I must keep trying Thanks for the info anything else would be welcomeCharlie

I suggest you look for the birth of a Reginald Ebsworth (the 'B' may have been added later) in West Ham registration district around 1880, say Jan 1879 to Dec 1881.  Assuming there is only one such birth, that would give you the father's name.  You can then start searching the marriage indexes from, say, 1900 (don't know the minimum marriage age at that time), using the father's name to validate each one. (I think that 1837online will arrange for these checks to be done by the Family Records Centre in London.)You say that in the 1891 and 1901 censuses, he was still in England.  His location in 1901 would be a good indicator of where his marriage might be found.Was the attempted suicide at Southampton or Brentford?  If the former, the Hampshire Police might be able to help."left his daughter with a woman at Brentwood" -- I assume that's a typo for Brentford!Incidentally, there are some (but not all) indexes available free at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

RichardThanks for your email, but we have very little to go one.Reginald B Ebsworth 1881 census age 1 born West Ham Essex1891 and 1901 census still in England1910 USA census widowed22 April 1912 England news paper clipping Charge of attempted suicideReginald Ebsworth 31 a ships steward of King Edwards Road Shirley near Southampton. prisoner upset over the death of his wife and little boy. Prisoner said he left his daughter with a woman at Brentwood but strangely enough it turned out to be a little boy whose child it was no one knew it's mine the prisoner said. He was remanded for inquiry, Scotland Yard was unable to help. We have no idea of his wife or childrens names,  births,wedding,death nothing at all. We have 3 newspaper clippings in relation to this episode saved by the person who adopted the boy and oddley the boys name was Reginald, Way back in those days there was no records kept of adoptions. So we are battling.            Charlie

The birth, marriage and death indexes for England and Wales from 1837 onwards are available online (but chargeable) at www.1837online.com.  It will be tricky, though, if you don't know Reginald Ebsworth's wife's name.  Do you know when he died?  Death certificates can sometimes have information which helps further research.

JimThanks for message re; the Otewills I have forwarded it to Audrey via TW8. who was interested.The person we are trying to trace is the father of the boy adopted by Charles Hutchinson, we think it could be Reginald B Ebsworth? born 1880 in West Ham  but back in the 1900's adoption was not recorded, we now live in Australia and can only use the internet, which is a pain in the bum. We have census records up to 1911, but without going to Kew we seem at a dead end. What we would like to find out is the name of Reginald Ebsworth's wife and their childrens names, if you could help in any way we would be very grateful. Also:...in 1938 Directory..A Charles J W Hutchinson lived at 8 Ernest Gardens just of Strand on the Green W4.Walter Ottewill was at 5 Challis Road.... Albert Alfred Ottewill lived at School House,Brook Lane W4Albert Harry Ottewill lived in 253 Popes Lane? near Gunnersbury Park.

Charles, can't help you with your questions re your wife's family but, I was wondering if you are any relation to the Ottewill's who lived at 5 Challis Road, Brentford many years ago? My husband's grandmother/grandfather were named Ottewill and lived there in Challis Road. Ottewill is certainly not a common name, yours is the first I've come across on the internet. Just wondering....

Hi CharlesIn the Kelly’s Directory for Chiswick 1938 (covers Brentford as well) I’ve found a Reginald Hutchinson at No 3 Bedford Road Brentford.The name is listed like this Hutchinson RegnldI hope this helps as I found no listing under Charles Hutchinson.
