Skip Hire

Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably priced Skip Hire in the area?  Most of the companies I've tried want to charge upwards of £300 which seems excessive to say the least.

Pavements are in a very bad state again.  Everybody needs to be reporting broken paving stones and complaining about the heavy lorries eg skip lorries and scaffolding lorries which keep on driving over the pavement and making it dangerous.  When work is signed off it should include an inspection of the pavement.Unlit skips are dangerous and if a skip is not kept covered overnight all sorts of other waste some of it hazardous and flammable is likely to be added.

Emma, you are right that getting rid of rubbish and building waste is expensive, and it is everyone's interests that this process is regulated.The best skip companies (in my opinion) I saw advertising were the ones who did reclamation and sorting of the skips contents.  You often see skips full of earth, which could be recycled as earth, which then have goodness knows what else tipped into the top, mixing and contaminating the clean earth dug from foundations.  It would make sense to make a skip full of only soil cheaper than one with other material mixed in.As far as the (let me whistle a little tune here) skip policy that was introduced around the time I sent in lots of photographs and took lots of people out on tours ... we were told recently that the Highways people didn't need to enforce the policy as the skip companies had assured Highways that they wouldn't damage the pavements.In which case there is no need to regard the policy as anything other than a whim somebody has drawn up to make Councillors think that there are rules and therefore any pavement damage should just be lived with/ignored/ mended at public expense as if it were an accident.The bit about not needing to enforce the policy because the skip companies had assured Highways they wouldn't damage the pavement was said by Highways on a street walkabout with Cllr Tony Louki and Cllr Sheila O'Reilly a couple of months ago.

In order to get a skip in the official way, with a licence and insurance etc, you have to go to a company approved by the Council.  They have a list of approved Contractors.  Its expensive, especially if you need suspension of a designated parking bay, or two even.  Getting rid of rubbish is very very costly these days.  As the previous poster said, if the skip can be put off road, there are other options, but not if on the road.

You may remember the huge amount of time I spent on pavements etc a few years ago.  One thing that was introduced, without any discussion, was a skip policy which turned out as useful as a chocolate tea pot.  Even today you can arrange cash in hand skips for off road  use, for £250.  Builder told me in the last few weeks that is what it cost him.  The inconvenience is that there is no contact or registered details on the skip so the owner cannot be reached and that they store it, full, long after you have finished with it, on your land.  I suppose if there are no registration details or owners details on it, no invoices or receipts, then it follows that it might not end up going through the regulated dumps either.  That would be a genuine worry.
