This is my reply to the CouncilDear GarethI have received an email in relation to your proposed changes to permit costs within current CPZs and wish to make representations against the proposals to impose an automatic £50 increase for Diesel owners. This proposal appears to be nothing more than a poorly thought through blanket, discriminatory money earner for the council. Firstly, I would state that any arguments for or against diesel cars and their environmental impact are redundant in this particular case. These permits are for PARKING. It doesn't matter if the car is an hybrid Prius or a Sherman tank, the permits permit PARKING. Therefore, there are no emissions being expelled when these permits are in use so to add a premium purely based on petrol type is a nonsense. You may argue that you wish to play a part in reducing CO2 emissions and this proposal is based on environmental factors, however I would argue that this is something that is being adequately dealt with at a source level through purchase & road taxes. Adding a blanket tax to PARK a car does not actually address environmental concerns in the slightest. Secondly, there appears to have been no thought given to new diesel car emissions versus old petrol car emissions. My previous permit was for a W Reg petrol which had an emission level of 171 g/km and was tax band H. My new diesel has an emission level of 125 g/km and is tax band D. Your proposal does not explain why I should be charged more for a car that is actually more environmentally friendly than my previous model. There is absolutely no justification to this proposal whatsoever. It should also be noted that the CPZ itself was supposed to be subject to a consultation 6-12 months after implementation, something that did not happen. Original cost of a permit was £60, now with this additional tax that cost will rise to £130. That is over 100% price increase in less than 3 years which is extortionate.I have copied in my councillors to this response and would like complete consultation in this matter and not the whitewash that was plans not adhered to and random posts erected that was the implementation of the CPZ in the first place.RegardsClaire Peleschka

Rod, I don’t mean to be arrogant, so apologies if that’s how my comments come across. I do get a little annoyed at people pretending they bought a car to be green, when they actually only bought it because it was cheaper than the alternative.Fairness of course is the way things should be done in this country, but unfortunately fairness is rare when money is involved. For instance, how fair is it that Labours spending plans were/are to be funded by increasing the higher tax rate and further saddling our children’s generation with suicidal public borrowing?  Good vote winner though as only a small portion pay higher tax rate and children can’t vote. ‘Don’t worry about the cost because someone else will pay’.  And how fair is it that council tax is based on the value of a home? That has no correlation to how many council services you use, or how much rubbish you might put in the bin, so it’s blindingly not-fair.Back to parking charges.  Agreed it’s annoying to find you bought something that suddenly gets an extra charge applied to it, but balance that against the 38,000 people that die every year due to the NOX and particulates from diesel emissions. Bear in mind that Brentford has just about the highest level of pollution in the country, do a little bit of maths and you come up with a level of damage to you, your children and everyone you see in Brentford equivalent to smoking 10 or 15 cigarettes a day. So what’s fairer, LBH encouraging people to get rid of diesels, or diesel drivers forcing our children smoke a pack of fags every day?
