Re-cycling Calendars.

Collection calendars were issued to some, but not all, houses on my road yesterday. They give different collection dates to the ones given in the on-line calendar. Yesterday was a garden waste collection day which the calender gives as next Tuesday again.Anyone else with this problem? I expect some confusion next week.JimL.

Oh, push-lease, Jim.  I was told I could not pay for two sets of garden rubbish sacks.  There is only a few collections a year where we need the extra capacity but unless I take the extra to the tip we are stuffed.

Most houses on my road  put out the "black" wheelie bins which remain un-emptied - the few garden waste bins were,A neighbour, who has paid £100 for two garden bins, is angry than only one gets emptied.JL.

Confusion reigns.  Lots of 'GREY' wheelie bins out with some people hedging their bets and putting everything out.  We don't actually know what to expect, even neighbour who is very spot on, has everything out.  One house has put out their old green garden waste bag and another has the new boxes plus the old blue bag ...then there is the house where the household bin is out and stuffed so the lid is almost completely open, wonder if this is normal or whether they cleared out the shed or teenagers room in advance of the fortnightly collections?

When last I used Morrisons' battery collection box, it was at the back by the customer toilets.

I do think that this is a badly thought out scheme and it does seem that people living in houses are being unfairly penalised by Hounslow Council.I recycle all that I can and excluding nappies I currently throw out for landfill less than a carrier bag of rubbish a week.  The leaflet from Hounslow claims that fortnightly collections will not make bins smell as only food, which is recycled weekly, does that.  However what about plastic wrapping that has contained meat and fish from the butcher and counters at supermarkets, that is what currently makes my bins smell with weekly collections alone and then there will be the smell of used nappies that have stewed for a fortnight!The leaflet from Hounslow also says that they want to increase recycling rates in the borough from 34% to 50%.  Two points on this;• Why make it more difficult - previously recycling did not have to be sorted to the extent it is now – plus items such as batteries could be previously recycled and now cannot.• Hounslow Council are obsessed with building flats on every spare centimetre of land and these generally do not have god recycling facilities.  It seems to me that Hounslow are trying to improve their overall recycling percentage by putting the emphasis on houses rather than improving recycling rates in flats.

Also take a good look at your carrier bags.  Some of them will be the plastic Bags for Life which supermarkets provided which when worn out can be exchanged for a new one free of charge and the supermarket will recycle your old carrier bag.  Check what is written on them (including the bottom of the bag)!These are not the same as Reusable Bags.

www.recyclenow.com  has info on how to recycle things not included in kerbside collection.Lots of plastic bags now have info saying that they can be recycled with the carrier bags at larger supermarkets printed on them.  These tend to be at the entrance of the supermarkets. Shops which sell more than a certain amount of household batteries have by law to provide a collection point for them.  These tend to be at the entrance of shop - eg Boots, Sainsbury's, Maplins.  You can check on www.recyclenow.com using your postcode.LBH still need to update their info on www.recyclenow.com

There is normally a battery collection tube near customer service in supermarkets but the point of all this is to stop contamination so between batteries which will go in the household waste and all this plastic in the household waste, we can't be doing this very well.

Yes, I asked that too, no-one seems to know. Some supermarkets will collect them, you just have to remember to hike them to the shop.

Can anyone advise where we are to recycle batteries. Not car batteries just the small household type and what about plastic carrier bags. I thought the whole point of paying for them at the supermarket was so we would use less but if they go into landfill what is the point?

See Chiswick W4 - you are not alone! Same here re calendars, perhaps to regularise collections for garden waste you'll get another and then revert back to the two weekly cycle?
