Trees on Lot's Ait

Does anybody know why some trees on Lot's Ait are being pruned/lopped/cut down?

I called LBH to check and they say the tree, a poplar, is 'fragile' apparently. Being one of the tallest trees and on the edge of the Ait, I guess it is very susceptible in high winds. LBH have approved the tree to be removed. It is currently about half gone. It will certainly change the skyline for me :-(

Looking (at a distance) at the base of the large tree at the west end of the island, the base looks very rotten/damaged.  Perhaps it's unsafe?
