A Big "Thank You"

I would like to say a big “thank you” to those 1,118 souls who voted for myself and the Community Group in Brentford & Isleworth yesterday. If I am being honest I must say that I did expect a higher vote, however contesting the general election was very much an experiment and was always going to be a sideshow to what we do best – fighting and winning local elections.  This is why we deliberately made no predictions, and set no targets. When we announced our intervention I expressed the view that Ann Keen’s majority would be too much for either the Conservative or the Liberal Democrat to overcome.  Whilst it would seem I was correct in that view, it must be said that both candidates fought very polished and professional campaigns and did better than I had expected they would – considerably better in the case of Andrew Dakers, the Lib Dem.  As well as demonstrating great professionalism their campaigns were clean, and this is to their credit.  I enjoyed the exchanges which they, John Hunt (Green Party) and I had at the hustings meetings, and the smiles and handshakes which took place between us after the result had finally been announced was in stark contrast to the infantile behaviour of the little plastic gangsters who escorted The Presence into the count at 2.30am in an obviously choreographed demonstration of their innate greatness from which all that was missing was a fanfare of trumpets.  What pillocks they made themselves look, and what a shame the voters could not have been treated to a preview of this hilarious and ludicrous display before being asked to mark their ballot papers.  In retrospect I am glad that my vote did not make the difference between victory and defeat for either of the two main challengers.  The vote for the ICG taught us what many of us had suspected already, that there is a vast gulf between people’s priorities at local and national elections.  Our campaign attempted to bridge that gap, but clearly most voters had different priorities.  We have already accepted this.At the same time the goodwill shown towards us by so many of our “hometown” voters in Isleworth in particular, even those who admitted that they would not support us in a national election, made it clear to us that our support base is stronger than ever.  Other than for a chap who berated me on the eve of the poll for not having put a stop to night flights, we did not encounter one solitary constituent who had been disappointed by our performance as councillors. Also, it has become clear to us that the Royal Mail failed to distribute a significant quantity of our election communications as they are obliged to do and, whilst I doubt whether this had a major effect on our vote overall, we will obviously be taking this up with them. The lessons learned from the campaign will help to fine-tune an already quite awesome campaigning machine in good time for next year’s local elections.  I am looking forward to them already. Many thanks once again to those who supported us yesterday and placed their faith in us.  Now for the real battle…

AlanI knew there were some questions I meant to ask you when we met at the count - 1. Does your MP share out the money she claims from her constituents for living a whacking nine miles from her place of "work" amongst the faithful, or does she keep it all for herself?2. If the latter, what is your incentive to continue ignoring or avoiding questions from her constituents about how she justifies claiming living expenses for a second home in Covent Garden?3. Do you find Ann Keen's expense claims more difficult or less difficult to justify on the doorsteps than the Iraq war, foundation hospitals and tuition fees - all of which I believe you privately oppose?3. What did the New Labour Party do with the money which you claimed on this forum to have paid Regal Distributions for the delivery of your GLA election leaflet, but which I subsequently proved at a council meeting you had in fact not paid for at all?  Has it gone to good causes?  Has it gone to Ann Keen to supplement her meagre income?4. Will your candidates in Isleworth next year be apologising to potential voters for the abuse to which they were subjected by your previous ward councillors, and for their refusal to support them on practically every issue of local importance over several years, or will you be training them in the same subject avoidance technique that you have employed on this forum in respect of the MP expenses scandal?Take your time Al, although I'm sure you're keen to address these issues there is no need to rush back with an answer...

Andrew:Yes agreed. The "Counting of Votes" marathon seemed to go on far too long...and a vast army of staff will need to be paid for the extra hours...money that could be spent wisely elsewhere. I would estimate an extra cost of between £5000 to £10,000! let alone the Police invoice! Its appears that all the staff were hired to be on duty till 3am....when it was presumably assumed that it would be all over by then. Mrs Keen's entourage arrived at 2.30am several hours after the other candidates...and one time for a 3am declaration! But not that night. At 3.05am an announcement was made that the staff needed to remain but they would be paid extra.."but we are not sure what".It does seem incredible,on reflection, that 46,000 voting slips can take 72 staff say seven hours to count, then sort, then recount. (There were nine lines of tables with 8 counting staff on each thats 72) 46 000 voting slips...divided by 72 staff.. equals 640 voting slips each. I could personally unfold 640 voting slips, count them, paper clip them in 25's, rubber band them in 100's, then unband and unclip them, sort them into piles for each of the six candidates, then count each candidates pile into 25's and rubber band in 100's.....in a maximum time of 3 hours easy.(not 5 or 6 hours)One problem was that weighing scales were not used if there was any discrepancy. If a ballot box..say number 58..from Osterley Library..was opened and tipped onto the table and sorted and counted...and a total of 1000 was calculated..the  Count Supervisor might say "correct" "your count balances with the 1000 voting slips issued by the clerk at Osterley Library.  However if 1005 voting voting slips had been issued at Osterley..the Counters would be asked to recount the whole lot again (unband, unclip etc) and they wouldn't be told that their first count was 5 out!It would have been so much quicker for weighing scales to be used at this point..either to weigh each bundle of 100,or even the 25's. A misscount..even of one item in a bundle of 25..would quickly be discovered.Maybe when a late delivery of Postal Votes arrived (in thier envelopes?)..they had to opened, counted and sorted by a special team.Whatever, it did seem long-winded...and compared with other constituences..we were stragglers on the night. Will the discussions on review of the event be revealed to us...who ultimately foot the bill?
