Your post doesn't entirely reflect my own experience Raymond.Until recently I worked for what you would call one of the "large conglomerates", i.e. a multi-national, multi-disciplinary consultancy and certainly during the time I was there they seemed to win very few tenders (I feel compelled to add that I virtually never got involved in them because I have enough of my own clients !) and nor did other similar sized organisaitons. And as a sole trader I've worked for one local authority on a major (£10 million+) redevelopment project of their town hall in conjunction with a team of other small consultancies, rather than one big consultancy providing specialist input covering all aspects. Also, my main client is one of the worlds biggest fast food operators who have moved with me from a small consultancy to the large conglomerate and also subsequently as a sole trader, for them it is all about the individual.Indeed on every project I do for them they work with a same team of experts who are all small consultancies, and I also work with many of their franchisees as well as head office. However, I do think alot of it is about word of mouth and reputation, and if I ran a small consultancy rather than being a sole trader I wouldn't devote much time/resources to tender bids because I am not convinced such time/resources is best spend on tendering.
