Waste Food Bin Bags

Does anybody know where I can get some more biodegradable bags for the food bin of the type delivered by the Council?At the library maybe? Will try there tomorrow.Thanks.

I too agree that the Youth Clubs are important.  I also thought that the Day Care Centre was an important accessible building but LBH chose to close that too - and sold the building - sending the users right across the borough.  I wonder how many stopped going because it was too far and too difficult to get to.

Councils haven't been allowed to borrow against the value of their housing stock.  Affordable housing isn't the same as social housing.  The reason why Councils have had to look for a getaround.

What does Hounslow Council intend to spend the £30m receipt monies on?  Are they just sitting on it or maybe going to loan it to Lampton 360 tp prop up this Recycling debacle?  Why not spend it on saving the Boroughs' youth clubs??

Mention of right to buy funding.....It's not accurate to say that all the RTB receipts go back to the Government Hounslow Council is currently sitting on £30 m plus RTB receipts

Councils usually only give an introductory roll of special food waste bin bags.  I don't know why LBH has decided to use the word "biodegradable".  I think it is a mistake as it is too easily to choose the wrong type. Biodegradable is often confused with Degradable. "Compostable" with the seedling logo is much better.

If it was all as easy as that you would not have a Government giving Council house residents the Right to Buy and not allowing the Councils to keep the money raised to build new houses.

Isn't/wasn't Hounslow Homes part of the Council like Lampton 360?  Or was that a contracted company like Carillion?  Very confused with all these smoked mirrors.  I simply don't understand why our freely elected Councillors should feel that they are more capable than the specialist individual companies to run such a wide selection of  services AND also make a profit.  That is not their remit. The Council is supposed to provide efficient services, not run a business and show a profit (which they've never been able to do anyway).  Their job is to employ people skilled and knowledgable, fully able to negotiate firm, water-tight  contracts with the various specialist contractors and enforce the contracts.      Under the present regime, it's a bit like a Councillor deciding they know more about say hip replacement operations than a specialist orthopedic surgeon!  DOTTY!  They have been voted to SERVE, not make a profit.  If that is their aim, they should have gone into business, not into a local council!

Now you know why those of us involved with Friends groups in parks have so many misgivings about the new regime after April. Another arm of Lampton 360 - who have ballsed up the recycling/refuse contract are going to take over from Carillion.

Did Hounslow (Chiswick especially) need this entire new recycling and waste set up?  The previous system was by no means perfect but surely could have been tweaked and improved without the huge expense of building a new recycling centre and the vast sums spent buying and leasing  all those new glossy lorries & trucks; the painted logos, the new uniforms for the crews, on and on goes the expense.  On top of that, there's the cost of the bins, boxes etc etc and the disposal costs of throwing away the old bags and bins.  Who paid for all that?    I can't see that any resident has gained from this vast expense.  I feel the money could have better spent on many other priorities - the youth clubs, close to John Todd's heart, for one!

Wouldn't it be better to encourage the people not using their FWBs to give them a try - or another try?  While the weather is colder is a good time to start.www.lovefoodhatewaste.com has lots of useful tips including information of the meaning of Best Before and Use By on labelling.Personally I think the downloadable A4 poster from www.therubbishdiet.org.uk is good and I have laminated this and sent it to university with date ignorant and panicking students.  First highlight, copy and paste the web address above into your browser and then search for /click on Best Before in that word cloud or whatever the official name is!

Ah - I've got a broken handled found and adopted small waste caddy.  This doesn't lock but I thought that some of them did.  Anyone got one that does?  In LBE the latest we heard was the suggestion to put the Food Waste Bin (FWB) :) on top of a wheelie for collection.  Seems to work except when the wheelie bin men collect first and put the bin down where it isn't seen by the FWB collectors. Maybe I'll suggest a neighbour and I take it in turns to put out one bigger FWB each week.

I keep the small caddy on the worktop and use a biodegradable bag which then goes into the bigger lockable one for the collectors.

For a while a new tenant neighbour only had a small food caddy which she put out each week - it was always a race to see who hit it first,  the foxes or the Recycling men.  Those little bins are very easy for the foxes to open so not a good idea.

Do you think that it is liquid or heat that makes them  biodegrade so fast?  I don't often have a problem.  I've used a variety of compostable bags. I now make sure that all tea-bags go into a ramekin and then are squeezed when cold before going into the FWB. (I know it would be better to just use leaves - especially as a lot of tea bag "bags" are made out of plastic!)  That saves on such a soggy bin.

I've given up on the bags provided by LBH as they would biodegrade after a couple of days, falling apart when I tried to transfer them to the big bin. Even doubling them up didn't help. I mostly get mine from Tesco although, if you want the best, M&S's are really durable.

LBH ones were a roll of 52.  So basically a year's worth.LBE was one of the first boroughs to do this.  We weren't offered the bags and we used newspaper.  I didn't use the small caddy I just replaced the undersink bin with the big "outdoor" one.  (It doesn't work unless the bin is near to the sink where your work and clean the plates etc.)Gradually we reduced out waste so that we now use the small caddy because that is all the waste that we make a week. I haven't yet tried putting out the small caddy for emptying instead of the big one...  yet - because it would be logical and until I do I won't know whether it will be emptied!

All supermarkets sell them, the cheapest option I have found is the bits and pieces stall outside Sainsbury's in Chiswick.
