Is this a SCAM? Consumer Refund Service.

This morning I received  a letter from:- "Consumer Refund Service, Office 1 Horton Pl., Seaton Burn, Newcastle on Tyne, NE13 6BU"enclosing sae envelope and a questionnaire wanting my personal details asking if I've ever had a loan, credit card, mortgage or overdraft from a given list of well-known banks and credit card companies - you're expected to tick the relevant ones and provide info of any other lenders you've used.   Once Consumer Refund get this info.,  they do all the work to ensure you get back the £1000's you may not even be aware that you have lost to PPI - and they do all this for FREE!   Any queries ring their office on 01661 678013.Sounds too good to be true - so I think this has to be a scam.  I most  certainly have not completed their form or made any effort to contact them either.   What should I do with this letter - pass it to the police or notify all the listed companies on their list of banks etc or just bin it?   If it is a scam I'd not want anyone here to be caught out.

Yes, I've had something like this in a brown window envelope with the Newcastle address it came from printed on the front looking very like a letter from the Inland Revenue or similar official government department.  I haven't done anything with it but it was worrying and I felt the same as you.  Which? might be interested.  Not sure if this is the right address for them but they can be contacted at www.which.co.uk

Bin it.What these companies do is to find out if you have ever had PPI. If you have and are entitled to some form of refund they will sort it all out for you and then take a percentage of any refund you are due. So they do the finding out bit for FREE and then take a cut of any actual money you get back.  It's not a scam as such, but you can find this information out for yourself by contacting your bank and at no cost.
