Again reading second-hand material, the Lib Dems' position would seem to be that they would take a holistic approach to alleviating traffic congestion throughout Isleworth, rather than concentrating on providing relief for just one small group of residents. In principle I think this is entirely the correct approach. In practice though it is not going to be an easy nut to crack now that the Church Street closure has already happened. For instance, would it be feasible to open Church Street while a traffic plan is devised for the wider area which could conceivably include the option of closing it again? Or, conversely, is it possible to build a broader scheme around the existing closure, accepting that whilst it shouldn't have happened it has and making the best of a bad job? It's not an easy puzzle to solve and I don't pretend to have the answers. None of this of course excuses the special favour recklessly meted out by the clique to a tiny few of their new-found friends, but we are where we are and the result is that designing a scheme that works for the whole community is going to be much more difficult now than it would have been hitherto. I would be interested to see some real work done on this by somebody with honest intentions, whether that would be the Lib Dems or anyone else with aspirations of office.
