Worton Road

Thank you to Guy Lambert for visiting this road this morning within an hour of being contacted. We discussed the general state of the road regarding cleaning etc. Worton Road has become a rat run which is now experiencing double decker buses using it as a cut through from Fulwell Garage to Hounslow Garage constantly. Vibration from the road humps is horrendous for residents especially when car transporters, Selco lorries, skip deliveries etc and other multi axle vehicles go over them. Indeed Mr Lambert was very surprised to see that road humps were on this road and witnessed for himself the road humps do not slow the traffic speed as it merely continues as the same speed over the middle hump.Time for removal of humps and a weight limit on this residential road?

So, a petition from as many local residents as possible who are like minded, to your own local Councillor + support from Lambert, should illicit some action, one would hope.

So why this then?"Have just received an e-mail from Guy Lambert stating it is Hounslow Highways view the humps should stay. The fight will go on."So it should be down to members as to whether or not they take the advice offered - they don't have to, they should have minds of their own, tail wagging dog.

Thank you to all who have commented on the issue.For clarity, it is Hounslow Council  officers in the traffic department and ultimately members to determine whether or not there should be humps not Hounslow Highways.

And of course there is no real engineering in any of this: just as an operator - dump some stuff into a black box (computer) -> get the answer -> profit!

They dont need to listen to the human view as they have ABSOLUTE INFO eg weights traffic flow times speeds etc. Feed these into a computer and they get answers.

It is my experience that traffic engineers exist in a parallel universe, it may be one thing using graphs, and formulas - but what they don't do is listen to local residents actual day to day experiences. Hence they can make really daft decisions.

Well... they must've had their traffic engineers look into this one... I wonder why I've been so skeptical about the job a lot of traffic engineers do these days...

I remember being told many years ago about how the fire brigade hated them too because the vibration shook the various  bits of apparatus about under the side shutter which made it tend to jam - or something like that.  I wonder if that is still the case.

Completely agree Steve as cars are parked on the two outside humps all the traffic goes over the middle one.  Took me 15 minutes this morning to get out of Worton Road.

Yes the current humps are designed so that ambulances axles are wide enough to miss them but it would depend on cars parked and oncoming traffic so it would be good if Mr Lambert can finally listen to residents and have them removed and also get the potholes fixed around the Redlees Park entrance area.  The humps effectively cause the potholes.  I would agree that Worton Road may have been used by a few before Church Street closure but it is now 50 times worse. More and more people are using it to avoid the Twickenham stretch between Van Gough House and London Road both north and south bound. Northbound Worton Road the tailbacks  now stretch from Oak Lane to London Road morning and evening and southbound in the mornings the chaos is from the Oak Lane pub down to Gumley House. Parents are walking their children on Worton Road to Isleworth schools breathing in the toxic fumes every morning. It is especially bad around Selco and Travis Perkins and Curries Motors where Heavy Vehicle deliveries are made in the mornings during the school run. Cllr Lambert should visit Worton Road and indeed Twickenham Road and South Street between 8am and 9.30am and between  3.30pm and 7pm. It is chaos.

I had no prior dealings with Councillor Lambert and found him very helpful and interested in the issues of Worton Road. The road has been a rat run even before Church Street closed. One set of humps were removed permanently at the Twickenham Road end many years ago. Residents do not see the need and certainly did not ask for them. According to Hounslow own documents humps are know for creating the issues we are complaining about. Multi axel vehicles and double decker buses all cause issues. As I am writing this an ambulance has just raced over a hump which was felt in my house. I had the misfortune to need an ambulance last year and the Paramedics said they disliked them and the issues they cause. I am hopeful through Councillor Lambert the issues raised can be looked at.

When they first laid the bumps they had to be removed because they didn't comply with the axle limits for ambulances which often use the road to get to West Middx Hospital. You couldn't make it up. The costs of removing and replacing just sucked up by the taxpayer.  Worton Road has indeed become a massively used rat run since the closure of Church Street as everyone tries to avoid Twickenham Road which is constantly at almost deadlock. The traffic lights at Van Gough House have become a joke too. Cllr Lambert hasn't a clue about improving traffic or noise or pollution. He has only one childlike vision which is to get the whole of Hounslow Borough onto bicycles and keep all traffic away from his mates in Church Street. Worton Road is now an obvious  by product Lambert's Folly - the closure of Church Street. Any fool could have foreseen the problems.

Mr Lambert contacted me when I e mailed my local Counciillor and he offered to come to have a look. I was very impressed by him and his comments. The humps have been a long running dispute with LBH. I have lived here 40 years and been told residents requested them- rubbish. One road fatality in 40 years, 2 recent drunk driver incidents with no injuries a few minor bumps none of which occurred near humps.When London or Twickenham Road is closed for any reason all bus routes are diverted to Worton Road  including 24 hour routes. Lack of sleep is not the only issue, noise, vibration when sitting on your sofa, cost of replastering walls etc. Humps were removed last year when road was resurfaced. We could sleep for first time in years. Much to our dismay they relaid the exact same humps a few weeks later.

Well done for getting our highways tsar to come down & look at this. Worton Rd has been one of the major casualties of The Twickenham Rd / Church St fiasco & the humps have always been an ineffective pain for residents & public alike. The lights at the junction with Twickenham Rd have always been out of sync causing more disruption to traffic flows.We were promised major changes to this junction & the one at Mogden Lane to ease the situation some time ago, but as usual nothing has transpired to date.

Of course - one the biggest contributing factor could just be the closure of Church St. and the ridiculous roundabout at the South St. junction which cause such congestion on Twickenham Rd. Leading to traffic doing all sorts of diversionary tactics to get out of the hell on wheels created.What is needed is a comprehensive traffic management survey from the A4 to the A316 - I won't hold my breath.
