Shopping

Today I have been into 4 food shops - two of them major supermarket chains, and have been unable to purchase Pease Pudding. Tesco used to sell it and now have decided not to, neither do they sell packets of Semolina only tins. Not a lot of good when you need Semolina for a cake. I did in the end find that in ASDA, but what about Pease Pudding - they sell faggots which we like, and that's what you traditionally have with faggots. Several enquiries in shops have met with totally blank looks and one person even asked if we were from 'up North'!! Help!

We buy Brains faggots - which most supermarkets have in their frozen food cabinets - I haven't seen fresh ones in donkey's years.

Arrived this morning - 6 tins of Pease pud. via e-bay, should be enough to get us into next year at least.

Morrisons have pease pudding.  Checked last night and it's with the other tinned veg.

Nicholas - you haven't lived - faggots are spicy and meaty and served in a lovely gravy and make a warming dinner in this weather. Pease pudding is made from split peas - have you never heard the nursery rhyme?Pease pudding hot,Pease pudding cold,Pease pudding in the pot, nine days old.We finally located a supply Pease pud on e-bay of all places!If you like Haggis or black pudding you'll probably like Faggots.

I have never heard of Pease Pudding! I thought Faggots were associated with poverty and do not contain much meat. Surely  roast beef must be better.

Waitrose used to do Bury black puddings and the fish shop on Twickenham High St, Sandy's I think it's called do a decent Scottish version and also a haggis. They do great kippers and other fish too.

Ours too! We love Haggis although we are Londoners through and through for many generations.For a smashing black pudding - Macken Bros in Turnham Green terrace.

Vanessa - you are clearly a woman of impeccable taste. I usually get mine in Waitrose. Their stores are not within easy reach of everyone but the last time I went there I got my pease pudding for about 50p a tin. Good stuff it was and you can't buy many things for just 50p in Waitrose.I'm from "up North" and I am frequently surprised by the lack of "provincial" delights in southern shops. A really good black pudding is quite hard to find. However tomorrow is Burns Night and my "Great chieftain o' the puddin-race" (imported from up North) is securely installed in the fridge.
