It is incredibly expensive to harness tidal power.The scheme that was vaunted for Swansea was not only expensive but riddled with 'questionable' practices which effectively hid the costs within a network of companies and would have resulted in some of the most expensive electricity in Europe.

What is the situation with tidal power?  We are surrounded by tidal waters surging in and out twice a day that must produce a lot if it can/could be harnessed.

Dinorweg in Wales generates a massive 1.8 Megawatts of pwer and has done so as an infill demand site since 1984There are well ove 100 hydro electric schemes in the Uk ranging from Dinorweg down to 'little' one gigawatt schemes in Ceredigion.

Yes but you use lots of little generators as they do on the continent. Solar panels are expensive and cause a problem when worn out. Look at gridwatch and see the difference between us and France on hydro.

The Brent has long had flooding issues particularly in the Perivale Area and a lot of work had to be done to alleviate this in recent years.Problem is the water table is falling is some traditional places and rising in others from over development . Large buildings and basement conversions put an enormous amount of displacement of the local water table which is why older buildings nearby often start to develop damp issues. None of which ever gets raised at planning point.  Think of a Brick being placed in a full bucket of water. HEP is brilliant but only works with continual force of water pressure to generate any amount of cost effective return.  Also in many locations the water reserve has to be replenished and often pumped back into a reservoir during low demand periods. Locations where HEP can be near continuous and  viable are quite sparse in the UK.  In France HEP has almost disappeared in favour of Nuclear. Seems a bit odd but the replenishing cost was outstripping the generating income and the ageing infrastructure becoming costly for full use.

I thought Scotland had a fair chunk of hydroelectric power.Locally there were well advanced plans for the Ham Hydro on the Thames until Lensbury Club got the planning permission quashed.http://www.hamhydro.org/I gather that the flows in the Brent aren't high and reliable enough but wonder whether the history of mills on the River Crane and Duke of Northumberland's River might support something.....

The Whaley "Dam" is nothing more than a header tank for the Peak Forest Canal Network.    It tops up water lost during the operation of the locks upstream.  The install cost of any sort of generating equipment would take donkeys years to recoup, given the low water flow in anything other than peak Summer months.

Mr Brooks. I have been looking at the gridwatch and found a French one. A big section is marked HYDRO. I wonder why we dont have hydro in the UK? I notice in France even relitive small streams have little dams with a small turbine generator  it all adds up together with larger dams. I noticed the Whaley dam in the UK was not generating electricity.

Found out there have  been three near misses in the last three months. Last Friday there was a frequency excursion from 50hz to 48hz.
