I am a cat person - but do accept that they can be a pain if neighbours are not - (ours are luckily). Similarly we have a problem with bloody yapping dogs, are the owners all deaf I wonder? However owning a pet comes with responsibilities, and I don't think people actually work it through before rushing in to getting that sweet little puppy/kitten/rescue. Vets bills can be horrendous, insurance is another minefield, and that's without food and exercise (for a dog) - flea treaments etc. Fortunately our cat only picks on me! Pets are family members and deserve the consideration you'd give to any person - not to mention taking on board that not everyone else shares your devotion, especially late at night or first thing in the morning barking its head off! Clearing up after Fido ain't nice - but it does go with the territory, dog faeces can contain all sorts of nasties that can have serious health implications especially for children, and who wants it trailed into their home? When I see some of these people I wouldn't let them keep a pot plant never mind a living thing.
