I have been to almost every farmers market in Brentford and I also fear its total demise.  On Saturday when I was there I think there were only about 7 stalls.  I tried to buy something from each of them even though quite frankly I didn't want anything at all from any of them.  I felt that they each deserved some support for just showing up.A lot was said on earlier postings about the cost of the good for sale and it's true that most things are a lot more expensive than the supermarkets and not everything on sale there currently is better than the supermarkets.  For me the best buys were from the meat man that only came to the first 2 or 3 before abandoning Brentford for West Ealing.I have always believed it was in the wrong place.  Brentford is not somewhere people come to shop.  Most people shop out of the area i.e. Chiswick, Ealing etc. mainly because there really is nothing to bring you to Brentford.  Therefore any new venture such as this needs to be in a prominent or picturesque position and possibly on a Sunday rather than a Saturday.  Market type places generally do better on Sundays i.e. car boot sales etc.  The Health Centre is neither prominent nor picturesque.  I have always felt the Butts or the area in front of the court would be better sites.I tried to encourage my nephew who owns a Polish Deli to have a go at the market and he went and had a look a couple of weeks ago.  He felt there was nothing there and it would probably not be worth the effort of investing in a stall and the time and work involved where there was so little to attract people.I really think this is an opportunity missed and I will be sorry when it finally closes as I fear it will in the very near future.

An overheard conversation Keith, and I can’t now remember the name clearly, it was something like the Sun Lee Corporation of Singapore, though I can’t track anything like that name on the web. But when I mentioned it to a friend in international business he recognised it instantly as a huge investment firm. You remember when the church and the adjacent ground was sold, and the agents said the buyer wished to remain anonymous? They were the buyers apparently. The following has to be recognised as pieced together bits of verbal information from all over, but the basic scenario behind Brentford Town Centre Ltd is:A couple of entrepreneurs, Rupin Vadera and Bhav Rhadia, saw the opportunity years ago, to make a killing out of the South of the High St scheme. Bhav Rhadia bought up quite a few properties in the western section, through one or more company names, including St Lawrence’s, the vacant land alongside, the coach station, what used to be called Gaines House, plus I suspect, hiding behind Alts Ltd, the Bennett’s yard and the titles to Ridgeways. Whether Rupin bought anything himself I don’t know, certainly others of his mates all chipped in to buy up other parcels in the eastern section once they were confident that Rupin had sewn up a deal with the Regeneration Partnership. As they are all under different names of assorted Pacific Island companies, it’s hard to discover who’s behind them!I was told that Bhav split from Rupin early on, though it seems that the properties were there for BTC to claim as included in their portfolio should the Town Centre scheme finally get off the ground. I’m sure that some financial deal would then have been worked out, but it seems that Bhav either became impatient or required liquidity, because last year he put St Lawrence and the vacant plot on the open market. What are “Sun Lee’s” (?) intentions? Who knows? BTC Ltd had suggested Wimpeys as the “preferred developer” for their scheme, and Wimpeys did have a meeting with the Council. They did however have their own ideas on the redevelopment, so the whole planning process would have to have started again from scratch. There was also a question mark over what resources would be necessary to relocate Twickenham Plating.Sun Lee (?) would apparently not have any such funding problem if they were to put themselves forward as preferred developer, but this presents its own problem, - the greater the investment level just in the land, the more pressure to develop as intensely and densely as can be forced through the Council’s Planning department! They may just wish to build on this spot independently, but unless that would dovetail with an overall scheme, the Council will be reluctant to approve. With fragmenting ownership, and dissolving bonds amongst BTC’s little coterie, no wonder that Councillor Ellar has been fuming at delays! He’ll have more than that with BTC disintegrating, and maybe, just maybe, this might demonstrate the dangers inherent in doing cosy little behind-closed-doors deals with such people.I am tempted to say, “serve them right”, but what has the community they supposedly were trying to boost done, to deserve years of stagnation, dereliction, and the attempted destruction of historic industry?

Ian..Your report about the dying Market is sad to hear..and hopefully the Organisers who launched it with a great fanfare can resucitate it a bit.We, as observers..have no idea if the Farmers are charged for bringing their stalls to brentford,,we don't know the extent of the advertising or about the distribution of posters. It does seem that Matt needs more help.In the passed several of us enthusiastically reported about the Market on this Forum. (do a Forum Search). I attended the Market several times and gave it great promotion in my postings. Later I spoke to Stallholders about their successes or concerns and when the outlook looked worrying ("I don't think I will be coming back " said one chap to me) I took time and effort to type out messages on this Forum..but received no acknowledgement from the Organises..even to say thanks for your comments.Anyway to be positive (Am I grumpy this weekend?) perhaps it should move nearer the Town Centre...although the traders did tell me that they did like the open space at the current venue...and the facility to park their vehicles near their stall.I reckon the cobbled streets of Ferry Lane would be atmospheric as a location..or outside the Magistrate Courts..or perhaps the Butts.Perhaps, some local Charitable organisations should be involved too. Chiswick by comparision seems to have several Market stall locations..busily near Sainsburys and also on Dukes Meadows..what's wrong with Brentford? Someone needs to stir the porridge a bit harder!!..or is it all in vain?
