So what do I do?
A week or so ago I read in the paper about a driver who pulled forward of traffic lights to allow an ambulance to pass. He then received a traffic ticket from the camera at the junction, for 'going through' a red light. I think he said that he just pulled forward of the lights and then stopped. The article said that he should not have pulled forward to clear the way for the ambulance, and that 'emergency vehicle drivers are trained to know what to do', or words to that effect. I have probably done this many a time with no more thought than is it safe to move slowly forward and allow the emergency vehicle to pass?Last night I was sitting at red lights at a traffic light junction with a yellow box the other side of the lights. I was boxed in, in the left-hand lane with both lanes full of vehicles. In front of me was a bus and suddenly a police vehicle with all its horns and lights blazing, appeared through the jam behind me. It was clearly requesting that we all move out of its way- isn’t that the point of the flashy light thingies and sirens?Everyone behind me moved clear, as you would expect, and so did the bus in front of me which moved into the centre of the yellow box. Having read that article and having heard all about Ken’s yellow box fever, what do I do? It was only me blocking the flashing lights and sirens, so I pulled forward partially into the yellow box, too....... gulp!
