Appreciation for NHS staff - 8.00 pm, Thursday 26th March

A round of applause isn't enough - nowhere near enough - but let's show appreciation for our NHS, where lives are being put on the line to help save ours. I would also like to put in a word for staff in supermarkets and pharmacies who are the recipients of abuse and mistreatment from certain members of the public. They deserve our appreciation as well.Can we make this happen? Please share, share, share. 'During these unprecedented times, they need to know that we are grateful. Absolutely. A lot of old folk who ought to be home themselves are knowingly taking risks themselves purely for others.I have to say I have persuaded a couple of them to stand down and have taken over their chores. They have done enough and need to take care themselves. I'm shopping for them today! Ha ha!But the good in people, hopefully will overpower the sheer greed in some that last week was shocking in some places.Biggest clap so far is all those supermarket staff who have really been the front line. Getting shouted at, moaned at and had a horrid time by the not so nice of this world and at the same time turn up for work with minimal protection and no testing. So we can eat and keep clean,Would be nice too for all shoppers in shops to stop at 11am and 3pm every day and just clap in the stores.

Raymond - couldn't agree more.  Where I live there are two separate people, one mid 70 the other 83 who have been scurrying about shopping for several of us in isolation here.  Bags left on the doorstep to avoid any direct contact.  These people are really brave and so kind.  We also have a group of younger people doing the same.  his terrible virus is bringing the very best, in a few cases the very worst, out of people.

Not forgetting all those who have taken it on their own to deliver and shop and supply elderly and housebound on their own in particular and have been doing so for weeks already.I know of several locally who do this out of a strong sense of duty at their own cost and most are self employed with no income at all right now.So it's more than we hear about doing stuff for others.Hat's off to them.

Oh yes - absolutely! I spoke to Philip last week, what a lovely man and what incredible work they do. I would add that, as there are clearly supply chain and panic-buying issues, the donation box at Morrison's may well suffer. A direct donation to the charity is probably the best way forward, as (where possible) they will be able to purchase in bulk, so every pound will go further. We might think about the Red Box project as well. That need isn't going away either. There's also Beauty Bank, an organisation started by Sali Hughes and Jo Jones, where hygiene products such as shampoo and shower gel are provided to those in need. So many people doing such good. It makes me hopeful.

And can we include our lovely www.hounslowfoodbox.org volunteers, plus teachers (like my daughter) who are supporting everybody by looking after the children of key workers and vulnerable kids.
