How are our local care/nursing homes getting on?

Just wondered.  Hope all is well.

I visited a French care home (state run). The care assistants seemed very attentive. There were simple maths every afternoon, and shape sorting etc. Then singing etc. In the entrance there was a lake with plants around it. I asked what the idea was and was told the plants were from the local forest (it was in the country) and gave them a reminder of life outside. The rooms were very nice with blinds in between the double glazing operated by a button. It turned out all the staff were civil servants. I looked up on the internet and found France has 5 million servants, and Germany 2 million. So as you say Peter there is another scandel and of course the statistics of care home covid19.

Yet another scandal is fully revealed, after years of neglecting adult social care by penny-pinching central government, hard-pressed local authorities and privatised care home companies. Of course the companies running them should have taken the protective steps necessary without falling back on state help. But it's the same story of private profits and the public sector taking the risk. This crisis proves we need a properly funded National Care Service linked to the NHS. There was something just like that in the recent Labour manifesto, but the great British public wasn't interested.

I contacted the home my friend is in via email and had a lovely call from somebody, within the hour.  Full explanation of homes situation and friends condition.  I asked if they could call their daughter, which they also did.They had 5 people tested and only a couple came back positive. The symptoms all 5 had could have been the virus or other typical medical conditions.Some staff are simply too frightened to go into work.  I think we can all understand this.Not a local nursing home.

This inability to contact care homes or people in them is bad news but has been difficult for years.  It needs to be re-organised.There is a disturbing article in the Guardian today about care homes in Ealing, the lack of staffing as so many are ill, and the constant arrival of new patients from hospital.

Daughter of a friend in a Hampton Care home can’t get through to establish how things are going or arrange a video call.  Such a difficult time for everyone.

As a side note, as a fair few of these care homes are private and sometimes charge residents or their families thousands of pounds per week should they not have been responsible for PPE and if so are they being billed when they receive any from the Government?
