Kerbside - and communal - recycling and waste collection is working fine despite volumes being around 30% higher than normal - not surprising as most people are at home. The Recycle360 workforce is at full strength and sickness rates are no higher than normal despite the threat of Covid 19.The Tidy Town service operated by the council has just had its price reduced from £50 to £40 for up to 5 items and it's now working 5 days a week. This is almost certainly better value than commercial alternatives and you are completely assured waste is recycled or disposed of responsibly. Flytipping is normally cleared by Hounslow Highways as part of their fixed fee arrangement: this continues and volumes are normal for the time of year. What's up is the number of reports, presumably because many people are at home and walking around for their exercise, also because the quite new FixMyStreet app is so easy to use to report flytips or other problems on a mobile device. There is no additional cost to the council for clearing flytips, though this is clearly not something anyone wants  and so we regularly fine flytippers - more than 4800 fines for flytipping and littering were issued last year. As our better CCTV systems come on stream we will be better placed to catch people this year. All Household waste recycling centres (like Space Waye and Townmead Road in Kew) are closed across London, though it's possible we might reopen them as and when the lockdown eases. If we do, we will do it in lockstep with other councils especially those in West London Waste  which include Richmond, Ealing and Hillingdon.Meanwhile, It has been good to see how many people have thanked our waste crews - everything from thank you notes on the bins through to a bottle of champagne. I'm sure this feeds through into even better service so please keep it up - a thank you costs nothing and these guys are out there rain or shine, virus or no virus.
