The Sculpture is deeply unpopular with the general public and the residents of Ferry Quays. Whatever your views on the artistic merit of the sculpture, the fact that even the police have expressed concerns over the anti-social behaviour attaching to it should be ringing alarm bells. *BC&I Times 02/0704a) The large size of the sculpture represents a security issue, as it shields all activities behind it from the general public view. As the police have officially reported, there is evidence of anti-social behaviour having been performed there using the sculpture as a shield. b) It represents a health and safety problem as well, as local youths hide behind it to drink, littering the area. c) The construction is dangerous. Already we know of an injury to a child (see letters section of last week’s Brentford & Chiswick Times). Children’s fingers are also at risk of being cut or severed due to the laser cut holes in the structure. It is a matter of time before there are more injuries. d) The local police inspector has stated that the sculpture could create a major problem with graffiti in the future. (f) This sculpture is too large and is inappropriately positioned, blocking as it does the general public view of the river.First posted in july 04.
