Herbicide and Weed Management

Well done to the Council for the reduction in the use of herbicides.On a related topic - there was talk some time back from what I remember about having wild meadow type verges in parts of the borough. Have any of these happened and, if so, where?

Yes, it's weird how some areas like the wildflowers here on Twickenham Rd. are just beautiful, the Poppy field we toiled long and hard over has just gone back to weeds! Not daunted we will try again come the Autumn...........I think it's fair to say that Hounslow Highways have learned as they've gone along with this project, as have we all.

Outside Albany Parade (the Chemists, Smith) It's basically just a sign and mainly weeds!

Have to remember that many invasive weeds are also toxic and irritants and poisonous to dogs and other domestic animals.Others develop roots and invasive roots that can run for long distances and damage cables sewers and ducting in just a few seasons.This is why they are controlled and need to be controlled.Often that does mean at the expense of nicer wildflower varieties but house insurance and insurance can be void if no remedial or preventative maintenance is carried out.

I meant to post here earlier to say how I love the patches of wildflowers down Ealing Road.  At their peak now.  I wondered what was happening when the grass was mown right back earlier in the year for now obvious reason and in odd shapes.  Now I see why!  It's so refreshing to walk down the road and enjoy the colours - so many blue cornflowers, one of my favourite flowers.  Thank you to everyone involved.  The little garden of delights near Catherine Wheel Road on the High Street is now also in its second year:  I've sat regularly on the little wooden bench to enjoy the plants there.  Agapanthus now in full bloom.

Some worked better than others. The one on Brentford High Street didn't work at all :-( The Isleworth one is lovely and I mean to get around to check out some of the others.I would like a lot more and I'm pressing for them.

Very beautiful wild meadow in Gunnersbury Park.  The poppies are now over but there were a lot of cornflowers and chamomile last time we passed by - and dragonflies.

Thanks. I'll make a point of looking when I next get the 267 to Twickenham (mask on!).It would be good to know of some other sites, if they exist - or indeed potential sites, particularly in Brentford.It would be interesting too, to know what upkeep they require - if any.

Yes! They have - we (local Friends group, The Isleworth Society) worked with Hounslow to suggest small areas to enable them to 'green up'.  One of them is an area at the junction of Twickenham Rd and Crane Avenue, (plus other small sites) in Isleworth. This was thanks to the inestimable Karen Leibriech doing much of the original idea pushing with the powers that be. We also had 14 more trees planted on this area and the difference it has made is incredible. The beautiful wildflower meadow has been the subject of many compliments and is absolutely beautiful now it's in full flower. What was a plain old bit of grass with a couple of trees is now a local delight and makes for an lovely entrance to a housing estate.
