Extending houses without planning permission.

This sounds a double edged sword to me.  Guy on the front page reports on such a development in Clitherow Road. "One of the houses there is a council house that is being extended to provide 4 to 5 bedrooms .... input from the neighbours on both sides who have had various concerns, ....... and I can see this is going to make a super home for somebody."Must be a pretty large family if needing 5 bedrooms, presume includes grandparents as well as assorted kids.  Hope it doesn't turn into a doss-house - they can be a nightmare for neighbours!  Maybe this will give hope to Vanessa and the empty neglected houses near her.

For clarity, it was actually a misnomer to say 'extended' - I should have said 'adapted' ie, the extra bedroom was created by an internal alteation.The concerns of the neighbours were unrelated.

I'm sorry Jennifer but I'm simply confused - your chosen title for this thread, and the subsequent content of your opening post, seems to imply that whichever property Guy is referring to in his blog has been extended without planning permission.And I don't understand your basis for implying that (after all the extension might have needed and been granted planning permission), or perhaps I'm getting completely the wrong end of the stick and the point of this thread was to debate whether any extensions to any properties should ever be able to take place without requiring planning permission.

While up in the middle of the night I also apologist to you  Adam for mis-understanding the new??? rules on extending existing homes.  It seems all will be well wherever this is undertaken and the neighbours will be in agreement and happy.  I'm back to bed.

Thank you Adam.  So to be clear this Council House won't become a doss-house and upset the neighbours, it is purely to house a nice quiet but large family.  That's good.

I don't quite 'get' the thread title - why is anyone assuming that this property is being extended without planning permission ? - nowhere in Guy's blog does he say that, and the concerns raised by neighbours might be nothing to do with such matters.Talking about increasing permitted development rights, whilst outfits like the Daily Mail like to peddle the suggestion that it's going to become a building free for all, in reality there's a very extensive criteria which properties have to satisfy in order to be eligible for the incoming additional PD rights, and even then applicants will still have to go through a prior approval route which is by no means a 'slam dunk' given it takes into consideration subjective matters like design and appearance.

The problem with all this is the relaxation of the planning regulations, which are in theory, going to make it easier for householders to have work done on their homes. Quite where anyone has taken into account neighbouring properties and the enjoyment of those homes is not clear. I think Guy Lambert must have been affected by too much sun - this could provide the perfect excuse for some landlords to have houses in multiple occupation and cram people in to make even more money from properties. So no it gives me no hope at all, this is about more than one individual being able to do what suits them - there are adjacent neighbours and indeed the wider neighbourhood in  terms of parking -  no matter what Hounslow thinks - and the overall look of how the property fits in to the existing streetscape. The neglected houses near me are neglected by Hounslow's housing dept. who as far as I can see are some sort of sick joke.
