Hounslow Schools - success

The following is news from HM Magazine:Hounslow students exceed national average. A-Level and GCSE students in Hounslow achieved record results last month. Across the borough’s 14 secondary schools, A-Level results for A-C passes were up from 58 per cent to 67 per cent. Among many individual successes at GCSE level, four students were rated in the top five in Britain for English Literature, French, Spanish and Punjabi respectively, while two pupils were among the top five for Media. This year, 2595 pupils sat GCSEs and 58 per cent achieved five A*-C grades, up from 52.4 per cent last year. Is it not great to see our school results improving. Well done to all involved.

We are very lucky we have some terrific schools in the area. Gumley House deserves particularly praise because not only is the academic performance outstanding but they give an all round excellent preparation for life for their students.

It may be less meaningful to compare one year's results to another but, assuming all schools play the system in the same way, the cross borough and national comparisons are probably valid. There have been some really excellent results in some of the borough schools but generally as far as GCSEs go it appears to be a bit disappointing. Out of interest did HM Magazine give a national comparison or did it just print the Council version of the results without giving any context?

I will try to find out about the A levels. I have always found it hard to make judgements of how good our schools are on the basis of school results only. The posting from Alison seems to indicate that as the system of awards changes it is difficult to meaningfully compare one years results to another.

I'm delighted for all the local students who did well but these numbers are completely discredited by the fact that one GNVQ now counts as the same as 4 GCSEs.

This was reported some time ago in the local press Alan. It is great to see the improvement but Hounslow's GSCE's results remain below the national average. I couldn't find the relative position for A Levels - is it better or worse than the average?
