Sarah and Helen, our son has been working on our family tree for the last ten years. He has traced over 1000 names on my paternal side and only a couple of hundred on his mother's branch. Its quite interesting I suppose, in that most of our family history is about ordinary middle-of-the-road and respectable relatives - you know the lawyers, doctors, captains and chiefs. For me, what would be really interesting would be to discover and record the dubious and unusual relatives in our family - the tinkers, tailors, soldiers and sailors, richmen, poor men, beggermen and thieves! Perhaps even a past murderer or a "royal"?!Why are we all so grey and ordinary?  :-(

I have found it fascinating too Helen, when you start delving around.  Some of the things I have found out about my Grandpa's direct family have given me insight into a few conversations we had when I was far too young to take much in about family history, and into him.  My Cousin is a registered Genealogist so has covered that side of the family.  The person who is attributed as having made up the game of table tennis is one relative, a Gibb - I keep meaning to ask her if there is a link to a small group of Gibb Brothers ... ... ?  ;-)

well, I am fascinated by my familiey's history and over the pst two years have been trying to piece together bits and pieces...luckily Both my parents re still alive and marbles intact so I can ask them stuff...haven't formed it properly into any structure yet, but think I will soon....my husband's father (sadly departed in Jan this year)was obsessed with his family tree, and very interesting it is too. They all hail from Somerset and Dorset. My husband's forbears several generations ago farmed Worthy Farm where Glastonbury festival now is, and my husband's grandfather and his cousins ran Martin's grocers and ironmongers shops in Castle Cary (if you know the area)My father is Greek so difficult to really root about in archives, but my father and his friends were very involved in the resistance movt. in Athens when they were students and my father had to go into exile which is how he came to this country and met my mum...goodness; hope not too long winded...could go on and on, but bedtime and also should be writing a report for work....very distracting, this website!How about you? I mean your family tree?

Sorry, don't know - but there are so few around that it is possible there is a direct family link through hubbys surname!  I did make a start on his family tree but haven't got far enough with it yet.  Have you had a go at your family tree, Helen?

and Sarah; are you by any chance a Felstead related to a Cynthia Felstead that I knew when I worked in Ealing a couple of years ago? and oh how very much more reliable the E2 and the E8 are than the 267!

I found myself smiling (nicely) at this thread.  The other thing which made me smile the other day was the photo in the paper (yes I admit it, I read the Mail) of 4 Police in full unifrom on the bumper cars at a fair in Nottingham.  Somebody was trying to place a sinsiter slant on it yet it was great to see.  Apparently the officers were bumping into one another with gusto - and although there were only 4 in the picture, apparently there had been around 12 - now THAT WOULD have made a great picture!
