A railway question for those of a certain age
I would be very interested to hear from anyone who remembers a particular Brentford landmark as it was in the 1950s/1960s.The railway line to Brentford Dock was opened in 1859 and was closed in 1964, the track being removed soon after. Maps from the 1860s to the 1940s clearly show that there was a pedestrian underpass in a short tunnel under the railway embankment. The western end of the underpass can still be seen in Hazel Close, opposite the eastern end of Hornbeam Crescent. At this point, garages were built into the underpass and those garages are still there. It's not so clear what happened to the eastern entrance to the underpass, which is on the western side of the bus depot in Commerce Road.Does anyone have any memories of the underpass, perhaps from your childhood? Many thanks in anticipation.
