I've just listened to a lengthy item about this on The World at One. Many egg producers are currently selling to supermarkets at a loss, owing to rising production costs, which is obviously unsustainable. This chimes with what I saw in Ealing this weekend -- shortages at Tesco but none at M&S, which I take to be that M&S sell only free range eggs at a relatively high price and are, I imagine, paying their suppliers properly. We have to accept that eggs will cost more henceforth. I eat one most days and will be most upset if I can't get any!
