Some years ago I heard Teresa Gorman MP (remember her?) pontificating about how the English should make more of St George's Day in the way that the Welsh, Scots and Irish celebrate their saints' days.When asked by the interviewer (John Humphreys, I think) the date of St George's Day she was forced to confess that she didn't know!

When I was under 10 years old at Strand on the Green School (in the 1940s) Anne,we were all made aware of the 4 saints,dates and colours as part of our learning.We see much celebrating of St Patrick's Day on 17th March and I love to the green "fancy dress" that day.. especially
