Don’t overwater. We spent an absolute fortune on Franchi seeds, thirty special pots and endless sacks of organic wool compost from the Lake District during the first lockdown. It was our project. They grew like billy-o and we diligently watered them. They put on an enormous amount of foliar growth. We pruned them and kept watering. They grew more. Eventually, there was a tomato ripe enough to pick - the excitement! Excitement was followed by massive disappointment - it had no flavour at all. Hundreds of entirely flavourless tomatoes, useless for the salads I’d fantasised about. The only thing to do was to halve and roast them, then pass them through a food mill to create tomato sauce, enhanced with salt, pepper, sugar and herbs. So… don’t overwater. Just saying.
