The problem will be this nonsense of carbon offsets or in other words dumping a problem onto somewhere else and blaming something else. This is where the Ulez was first concocted and no doubt a Ulez 2.0 will be imposed across west and south West London to appease the decades of high pollution that works will entail as well as operations. The Chancellor parroting on about growth but when? It is needed now and quick. But this will not reap a benefit for at least 40 years and the cost may never be recovered in even her lifetime. Not withstanding that the airport is privately run and has shareholders and the hinterland overdeveloped limiting any more industry or adequate operational space without carving up what's left of the green belt.Boris's Estuary airport plugging into an already in place HS1  with a sea port and links to the rest of the country avoiding the main conurbations and yet still less than 35 mins by HS1, seems to make a lot more sense but will still be more than a generation away from benefits. Not mentioned are the jobs. There are plenty in and near LHR but the terms & conditions are a shadow of what was there 30 years ago.  My first job there is now proportionally 60% less than I earned in 1981, no proper breaks, no provided place unfair deductions for early shift timekeeping, but dependent on public transport being 100% reliable. No seats whilst on the floor.I feel really sorry for the current generation who have no idea what the same job was like a generation back. It was to be honest fun and pay was adequate for the work expected. There is never any mention of quality and career jobs - just jobs.
