""across the (Windmill road from Lett's the butcher and the shoe repair shop?"""it looked like a pub but was lived in by a lady who worked in the grocery store (Burwell's??) next to the shoe shop across Windmill Road""Hello again Audrey.I've got the old 1938 directory out again...and it lists the old shops in Windmill Road...on the east side..walking up from the railway bridge. At the Layton Road junction Mr Souther ran the sweet shop, and across the road, Mr Badcock ran a general stores..next was Arnolds the cycle shop, then Arno's the stationers (and fags?!) ...at No 43 was RG Letts & Sons, as you say, the butchers. Alex Underwood was the Shoe Mender, Burwell's was the Grocery shop (well remembered!)..then there was a hairdressers. (Hortons?)Across the road the busy railway sidings must have been a scene of much interest..and a few of the old railway buildings are there.I remember the Windmill Pub..and the publicity about its demise. More photos needed?? They're probably all hidden away at the Library!..We could do with them on-line!
