Questionable pictures

The use of an AI generated picture to illustrate the underage alcohol selling story is highly questionable and misleading, and crediting the picture as AI doesn’t make it OK. The CW4 site pulled the same trick a few weeks ago with their wheelchair and ambulance story, so this must be editorial policy. Just because the technology makes this possible, it's still of a breach of trust with your readers.

All the stories which appear on TW8 along with all its related sites is accompanied by a picture.The basis of this story and the resulting convictions resulted from the fact that  quoteThe first incident took place on 25 May 2023, during * a routine underage sales exercise* conducted by Trading Standards officers. :unquoteThe focus of the article being the regular underage sales exercises being conducted by Trading Standards. So as to posibly act as a detterant.So how exactly  would you choose to illustrate that story ? Hire a photographer,  obtain all the necessary permissions etc and arrange with the Council to have that photographer follow around one of these actual teenagers in the hope a shopkeeper might offer to sell them what would recogniseably be a packet of cigarettes ?Or maybe not bother to publish the story at all; as quite possibly people are not going to believe it anyway.Either that, or maybe just ask for your money backmichael adams

'Stock image' or 'Artists impression' or 'Google StreetView' credits might be acceptable, but these recent AI images seem specially constructed to illustrate a specific story, particularly the wheelchair on the ground by an ambulance on the CW4 site. For all we know, the text of these stories might be AI generated as well, which will in turn feed into other AI scraping software, etc..!

It really is an insult to journalism to use Ai for any news or factual reporting.Not good enough to credit it it is as misleading as the images used in planning applications.

The picture is captioned "Picture: AI Generated"For a "breach of trust" to occur, readers in this, instance, must be being encouraged to believe something, that isn't in fact true.In this particular instance, what is it you are you claiming that readers of TW8 are being led to believe,that isn't in fact, true ?  michael adams
