I must thank Ken Livingstone for that thermometer!!
It must have been very cold on Friday night...I woke up suffering with hypothermia this morning!!!Sometimes, we're advised not to keep the CH on at night...and especially radiators in the bedroom. And without double glazing in that particular room...I hadn't realised how cold the room becomes at night. This morning I was very unwell...arms and shoulders aching like mad..and I felt very groggy. Was it a minor stroke? diabetes misbehaving? I grabbed Ken Livingstone's thermometer that he had sent to all 65 year olds..and realised that I was at risk!My barber today suggested I should wear my Ski Hat to bed!So: Bedroom radiator now on..and Ski Hat at the ready! Thank goodness I've recovered!!From the GLA website:"""How warm is your room? Are older people you know - family, friends, neighbours - warm enough?Last winter 3,000 pensioners in London died of cold related illnesses. Cold weather kills because it increases the chances of colds and flu, and because exposure to the cold thickens the blood and increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes. So keeping warm is really important for older people - especially this winter, as the Met Office has warned that it has a 65 per cent chance of being colder than average. The Winter Warmth campaign is giving advice to older Londoners over the age of 65 about how to stay warm this winter, and sending out over half a million thermometers to Londoners over the age of 65 so they can monitor room temperature in their homes. An ideal temperature is 70°F (21°C). At a temperature of below 61°F (16°C) an older person may be a risk of hypothermia, a heart attack or a stroke. The thermometers include tips on staying warm, and the number for the Winter Warmth help line: 0845 605 2535.The campaign also aims to boost awareness of the benefits to which older people may be entitled, including grants available for energy efficiency improvements in the home such as installation of insulation or central heating. The Mayor, who is supporting the Winter Warmth campaign by Help the Aged and British Gas, said:‘In a society as well-resourced as ours it is wholly unacceptable that any pensioners in the capital die needlessly from cold related illnesses."""
