M4 closures and local impact

Got a bit of a shock when driving home to find that the M4 was closed junctions 1-3. I had spotted that there was some heavy traffic in the area at night just recently but hadn't realised the cause. Apparently it will go on until December. Don't get caught out.

For many years now the elevated section concrete has been degrading from acid rain etc. and maintenance has been required on an ongoing basis.It can only get worse unless there is some master plan to cure the structural problems. Are there any structural engineers out there able to give us more detailed info? The M4 closures clog the Chiswick roundabout as all westbound traffic has to come off the elevated section. Residents of Brentford can take a detour through Strand on the Green if you can take evasive action in time.

These night closures have been going on for years. The A4 is the primary diversion route but the impact isn't so bad because it is always late at night. The biggest problem is when you have been out of town and didn't know that the road was shutting. Staines late at night is not a place you want to be stuck in a traffic jam.
