The problem is probably that doing what John Carr did can be very dangerous and could result in even more injuries. The tone of Mr Dizaei' statement seemed to be 'he did good, but he shouldn't have done it'. And sometimes what you think you see isn't always what's really happening. A few years ago I was down near the river when, turning a corner, I saw a tall, well built fellow of about 30 trying to grab hold of a smaller woman of about 18. She tried to get away, he grabbed her and held on, she kicked him, nasty stuff. They were about, oh, 30 yards away. I started to run over there and was beaten to it by an off-duty policeman who was nearby, in the other direction, and had seen it all. What I thought was a bloke getting violent towards a woman was in fact a woman trying to jump into the river to kill herself and a bloke trying to stop her. So if I'd got to him and done something to prevent what I thought I saw, the consequences could have been terrible.Anyway. What is a pity is that it seems the police can't press charges without the agreement of the victim - I'm not sure why Mr Cann's evidence in itself wouldn't be enough.
