Plastic recycling in Somerfield car park

The plastic recycling bins were recently brought to my attention by a neighbour, and I can happily say that I now recycle about 75% of my rubbish. I've participated in the green box scheme for years, but it's only since I began recycling plastic that I realise how much of it there is in my bin.It occurred to me that others might not know about this (I walked through that car park a hundred times and never noticed!).

Thanks Holly.  I've been taking my plastics up to Tesco but Somerfield is so much closer.  Plastics recyling is very difficult to do and it's great that at least something is being done.

Anyone see that eye opening documentary on channel 4 about that bunch of cowboys who collect rubbish intended for re-cycling and simply dump it in land fill sites?I think lots of what we by is over packaged and that more rubbish should be burned, now that smoke filtering technology is more advanced.The government's own figures say that nearly 20% of our energy needs could be provided by burning more of our rubbish instead of sea dumping and land fill.

Yes! I have two bins - one for recycling and one for rubbish - and the recycling one fills up and gets emptied every week. The rubbish bin on the other hand never even gets more than a fraction as full and needs to be emptied purely for hygiene reasons.There is also a compost bin scheme. The council will provide a bin for the garden and give you all the info on what to do. My neighbour gets the benefit of my compost-friendly scraps as she has a garden and I don't.I have never been more than a lukewarm recycler as it all seemed a lot of trouble to shave a small chunk out of the rubbish. Now that the plastic is taken care of, it has motivated me to see how little I can manage to put toward landfill. It has become a very rewarding pursuit!Now I'm just waiting for some killjoy to point out the dubious elements of the recycling business!

Hi,So true. We do the recycling bit and now that we're taking plastics down to Somerfield we have about 1 black bin bag for the dustman every 3-4 weeks.Good waste recycling practice is essential nowadays and I feel that much more could be done to encourage people in this respect.The green bin scheme is ok as far as it goes but massive improvements could be made to the way all our recyclables are sorted and collected.I note that the Lib Dems have this issue at the forefront now. Good luck to them in the coming bye elections.
