Jamie Oliver - where are you?
I have just had the misfortune of spending a few nights at our local hospice attached to Ealing Hospital. Whereas I could not fault the doctors, nurses and other staff, the food wasn't fit to eat.......as the nurses said themselves they wouldn't give it to pigs. Ill people need to be tempted by the look as well as the taste of food, and nothing that I saw came up to those simple standards. Have you eaten - or wanted to eat in full health - two tinned plum tomatoes and cold soggy chips? What about rhubard crumble made from tinned rhubard sitting on a lump of flour and water - Crumble? you must be joking.....I could go on, but nothing fresh, everything tinned whether it be fruit (tinned peaches) or veg. (baked beans, carrots peas!). Even tinned mandarin oranges! I thought I was back in the nursery or in wartime England!Jamie Oliver really needs to have a look at hospital catering and to make it edible. Eating is an essential part of the recovering process, and as I saw it most plates went sraight into the dustbin bag. I have sampled both Charing X and Hammersmith hospitals at various times and found them pretty awful, but no way compared to the awfulness of Ealing.
