Advertising down the A4/M4

Anyone effected by the advertising hoardings/billboards down the A4/M4 corridor please let me know directly or reply to this message.Responses will be involved in a planning appeal against yet more advertising starting Tuesday - apologies for the late post...Many thanksStephenstephenbrowne@compuserve.com

RichardIn the previous administration the IBAC spent many hours in the planning committee fighting against these eyesores and potentially dangerous adverts...let alone the problems caused to local residents by the illuminated lighting and the shadows that were caused.Most of the adverts were refused permission only for them then to go to appeal and be allowed by the Inspectors.I'd say most unfortunately have had planning permission but granted by Planning Inspectors.I heard a rumour that the M of T may be changing their minds and begin objecting to more of these....we can but hope!!I'm sure that Cllrs Ruth Cadbury and Matt Harmer (whose ward has most of the relevant adverts ) will continue to lead the fight against any more.

"I just think that they are very unsightly and potentially dangerous (driver distraction)."I agree entirely.  I get the impression that many, if not all, of them have been erected without planning permission.  If so, Hounslow's planning enforcement unit must be even less effective than I realised, though I know it is under-resourced.  I think most of the adverts are within the Isleworth & Brentford Area Committee's responsibility.  (The one called The Torch is just within Chiswick.)  Would any councillors care to comment?

I would be very keen to see the letter and the spirit of the laws against motorway roadside advertising enforced.  I was particularly shocked that Hounslow Council joined in doing it, although it is possible that the advert I have in mind - the one that says something like "Hounslow supports the Olympics bid" -  may have been bought by someone other than the Council.The CPRE has published a number of papers on the problem.  Clearly the law is not straightforward, particulalry in relation to "mobile" adverts (the ones on trucks in fields next to motorways).  I'm not clear what you mean by asking for "anyone affected by [the adverts]"    I have no personal interest; I don't live within sight of them for example.  I just think that they are very unsightly and potentially dangerous (driver distraction).  I'm with you if you can find a way to stop them.
