Re-use any bag in Tesco and collect loyalty points

Tesco has introduced a new scheme to reward Clubcard customers who take their shopping home in a re-used bag:"... we'll give you an extra Clubcard Point every time you take your shopping home in a re-used bag. It can be an old carrier bag - from Tesco or anywhere else - a string bag, a rucksack, even a suitcase. It really doesn't matter. As long as you're helping the environment by not using new carrier bags, we'll give you Clubcard Points in return. As a result, we hope to cut Tesco carrier bag usage by 25% over the next two years." (Excludes self-scan checkouts and Tesco.com deliveries unfortunately)

i'm not sure if they are the same thing either  - they are called green loyalty points. when i did my shopping i forgot and just took some from the recycling box outside.  the cashier asked me and i said i had 10 bags - she gave me 10 clubcard points. this goes on my card as it i had spent £10 instore. the fact that club card deals come from these points im not sure they would be giving this much away . im hope im wrong. does anyone know?

At Mogden Lane Tesco on Saturday, the boy on the till tried to tell me that it was only Tesco bags that counted, until I pointed out the notice on the counter that said it was 'any bags'. He ws also under the impression that the Green Card was a different scheme to the usual loyalty card.

Thanks Angela for the positive feedback! Bernadette - really disappointed to hear Tescos didn't give you any points - that really is poor. They should ask each customer if they have brought their own bags and be really positive about giving points out to those who have. Hopefully it will improve, but it's a pain if it's up to the customer to remember each time and doesn't encourage those who don't normally bring their bags to do so in the future. Sarah - I don't have a shop (far too expensive unfortunately - especially in West London!) I sell at shows and fairs and also do mail order. I will be at Kew Fayre on Saturday 2nd September and the Brentford Festival (Boston Manor Park) on Sunday 3rd September. I will have plenty of bags for sale there.

I almost always use my own bags in any event so this Saturday as usual I went to Tesco in Osterley armed with a couple of bags and a wine carrier.  Did my shopping and paid.  Walked out (having forgotten to make any mention of the above to the cashier) and discovered I had not been given any extra points for providing my own bags.  Therefore I would suggest it must be the customer's job to remind the cashier.  I will try and remember in future however if most shoppers are like me they will simply forget, as I did, and it won't be long before they will stop bringing their own bags!

Hi Sarah,I have bought 4 string bags from Catherine and they are brilliant. I always have one in my handbag - they take up no room at all. Also the 6 bottle jute bag is extremely strong and I am confident that my olive oil and wine won't crash on to the pavement. I also have the normal jute bag and the very large one which are permanently in the boot of the car for big shops. Another major plus is the handles are very comfortable and don't cut into my hands the way plastic bags often do. I would highly recommend using them. Happy Shopping.

Thanks Sarah. Yes, they are strong. They will hold up to 20lbs in weight, are durable, washable (cold wash/drip dry), and will fit in any handbag. Although they can hold up to 20lbs, I would not advise putting a lot of heavy tins in a string bag as this will put strain on a small section of the cotton strings rather than spreading the weight over the whole bag. The bags are ideal for fruit and veg and for other general shopping. Also great for a parent with a buggy or for someone in a wheelchair as the bags can easily hook onto the buggy or wheelchair handles.

I heard(or may have mis-heard) on the telly that Tesco used a billion carrier bags a year.Anything that can reduce that phenominally high number has to be good.

Edward - did the checkout person proactively offer the points when you used your own bags, or did you have to remind them to add the points?
