Bulgaria and Macedonia

I know we have some well travelled readers on this forum so I wonder if anyone has any tips about what to do and see in Sofia and also Macedonia.I am travelling next Tuesday to Sofia on my way to watch England play Macedonia in Skopje and would appreciate any advice on either City?I have most of Tuesday and the Thursday in Sofia and the Wednesday in Skopje so would love to make the most of it while there.

I went through Macedonia by train a long long time ago when it was part of Yugoslavia. My principle memory of Skopje was how friendly the people were, how you never needed to buy food because people always wanted to share theirs and how awful their singing was. I didn't really get much beyond the environs of the train station and in any case I suspect it has changed enormously.
