The Islands in the Thames

I'm sure I read somewhere that Jim Lawes had investigated the little islands on the Thames and gave an account of their history but I seem to have a different slant on all this. For starters there were images printed of bike parts taken on private lands.  I recall this was Bill Palmers island, not Brentford Ait, and as far as I am aware he did not sell this little area on to anyone.  Could you have been trepassing on private property when you took pictures and such-like?  I know Bill Palmer did own bits of other land on the mainland, as did Goddards and Hounslow council, that was bought up by propery developers, together with the old defunct Manifold wines site, upon which the Ferry Quays estate now stands.  But not the island.  And the old boat-works.  I know someone is still using those boat-yards to do boat work and have been doing so for the past decade with Bill Palmer's blessing.  Though without any documentation it could be argued that the current user had been there long enough to claim squatter rights. As to the Brentford/Lots Aits, these two islands were created in the late 1800s when the river was dredged to make it deeper and shored up to stop it falling back into the river.  If you look close, what you call Lots Ait is two seperate islands with lots of trees and shrubs growing on them.  There never was any pub on there as you previously claimed.  So you won't find any structure when you investigate. There may have been a drinking den but I think the drinking den mentioned in days of yore was on an island a bit further down - on the opposite side of Kew Bridge - on one of the islands in the Thames in Chiswick - off Strand on the Green. This is my take on the history of the area.

Charlotte, Good to hear from you and welcome to the Forum tonight. You’re quite right that I did explore the smallest island recently..the one opposite Goat Wharf..and understand that it’s called Lots Ait. Are you saying it has another name? The other long island ..on the Brentford side of Kew Bridge..seems to be divided in the middle…it’s in two parts.  There is a narrow divide called Hog Hole according to the old map I have.  With regard to the drinking pub on this island nearest Kew Bridge (Brentford Ait)..this was stated in a recently published book by local historian Gillian Clegg. The book goes into some detail about Pubs in Brenford and Chiswick..and I must say that it was news to me..but we’re talking 200 years ago!. I guess that any remains of this old pub would be on the long island and adjacent to the New Musical museum. So I haven’t been on Brentford Ait yet..on either of the two bits..and I’ve no idea who owns it...or what on there. I'm just a local explorer. With regard to the island opposite Strand on the Green..that is called Oliver Island..and it is used by a National environmental agency. Oliver Island is outside my current interest..and there doesn't seem to be anything secretive about it.Now getting down to the nitty gritty….the Lots Ait visit was a result of being on my hands and knees picking up rubbish on the far side of that little island..(on an organised activity)..and wondering where a certain muddy patch led. It turned out to be a slipway..and then a little further along 500 beer cans and some 20 stripped bicycles frames etc..Of course my visit has been reported to the Police..and the question of trespassing is noted.  I have never heard the name Bill Palmer before..nor about the island being private...nor had I heard about “drinking dens" you referred to.So please ask more questions..as I’m not quite sure about your “slant”.Are we comparing notes about the local geography..or are you upset by something that I have done and reported?
