Jim - I know a lot of people work shifts so possibly this 24 hour opening could be useful for them , personally when we did try Christmas food shopping one year very late - thinking we'd be clever and beat the crowds, there was such low stock we couldn't get all we wanted. I don't think most people working normal hours will be bothered, and as long as any residents don't have to put up with car noise, trolleys crashing, lorries manouvering and general aggro AND assuming they pay the staff the rate for the job then I think it's a sign of the times. Interestingly Asda's parent company WalMart have an terrible reputation as employers in the States, and have come a cropper here with the Unions, so let's hope this brings decent employment and is not an excuse to exploit people while ripping off customers.
