Surprised that no-one has mentioned.........

There has not been one comment re the death sentence passed on Saddam Hussein.This Forum is normally full of topical debate - so what do us locals think?

If anyone's seen the film Amistad, the Saddam trial reminds me of the trialin the film....

I don't agree with the death penalty and I don't think Saddam should hang.I also think the trial was a political show trial, I believe this was proved when the government removed the trial judge who was said to be be to showing bias towards Saddam.The trial should have taken place in the Hague.

If we're going to be subject to the political will of the United States, then can we not just join the Union and get the benefits too?

"there would not of been that many if Saddam was left in power"How could you possibly know that? What Bush and Blair have underestimated is the deep divisions within Iraqi society. Maybe Saddam's repression did keep something of a lid on it but at some point the country was likely to go into a state of collapse. The presence of foreign troops may be all that is staving off total anarchy. When Tito died similar events unfolded in Yugoslavia but the intensity was much worse. In Iraq we hear of scores of deaths each day but in the Balkans it was thousands as ethnic cleansing took hold. In that instance standing aside and doing nothing contributed to the death toll. The politicians at the time were condemned for their lack of willingness to intervene.

Pictures of Donald Rumsfeld all pally-pally with Saddam a matter of years ago... then Iraq gets invaded because Dubya's dad didn't like its leader... then Iraq's leader/dictator about to be executed.  Surely Tony's getting just a little bit worried???

The operative word is topical. That said, there is no justification for a death sentence. I recall the mealy-mouthed reply from Clive Soley before this whole sorry business started and realised then that the Labour party had become subservient to the needs of the master.

Most of his crimes were committed while he was the US's "Blue-eyed Boy" - I would like to see George Bush Senior facing the same charges.

I hope Tony & Dubya can sleep at night after all the deaths in Iraq and Afganistan since the conflict started, there would not of been that many if Saddam was left in power!

I just hope that history will be his judge, not the "leant on" legal system of Iraq, in the long run.  In the same way I hope that George Dubya and Tony also have to face history as their judge too!I'm not saying he's innocent or guilty... just that I think noone will ever know the real motives behind the guilty verdict apart from historians of the future!

Suppose he has got what he had coming to him,but I don't think it will be carried out.Perhaps Hess's old cell at Spandau could house him...interesting on the radio today a couple of Iraqis saying how much better life was under Saddam.
