One small step?

Having popped into Tesco this morning to buy some croissants along with the Sunday papers, I was amazed to see that they have abandoned the big plastic container that they normally come in for a bag! Is this the big retailers finally beginning to get the message re  excessive packaging? Well done Tesco, there's a hell of a way to go yet but could this be the start?

As I understand things - waste is charged for in landfill by weight - the problem with plastic is that it's high in bulk but relatively light, and council's earn credits for waste worked out by that, so we can see that quite a few authorities perhaps don't go in for plastic waste. Hounslow is one of the very few local authorities that provide this service, as I live in the Worple Road area I can't think of anywhere where such a site as you have mentioned could possibly be situated.

VanessaThere's a danger in the New Year of Tesco's Osterley becoming the rubbish and plastic recycling centre for a wide region.They are to introduce a large new container,I understand from a Planning Notice, which will take all of your recyclable waste MIXED UP and not separated!!  All items deposited will be taken away all mixed and will be delivered to a giant sorting machine ...somewhere near Worple Road I believe !! ;0)..where it will be automatically sorted!  So this machine will sort out all the plastics,the bottles and the tins. Sounds too good to be true.Tesco's Recycling area at Osterley takes all plastic waste comfortably at present. This forms 60% of most people's waste I reckon and its nearness to me is so handy.The Council's Refuse lorries will have hardly anything to collect..and that should save a few millions a year!

Frightening to think how much rubbish and plastic etc. is generated by the Christmas period.

Yes - this is a wait and see exercise - but the amount of plastic we have to recycle every week is ridiculous, so here's hoping.

Vanessa,Three cheers for Tesco, if you are right!  I have started handing back some wrappers at check out and refusing the bags they offer for items such as detergents, etc.The girls never seem to mind, and all agree with me.
