What will they actually spend it on...?

The new taxes on air fares and all the green taxes that we do,or will be ,paying in the future,that is.How does giving the government more money actually minimise the pollution of the environment?I may be being naive,nay thick,but what do they actually do with the dosh?Does it go on research into cleaner fuels,more efficient engines,better filtration of fumes etc?Anyone actually know?

Keith Maybe our MP, Mrs Keen could raise this matter in the house. She hasn't raised anything of any significance so far so this might be an ideal opportunity for her to make an impression on us and the country.

I agree. There is good evidence to say that now filtering technology has improved and glass encased storage of harmfuls is becoming a reality that all our rubbish should be burned,creating an estimated 17% of electricity needs for the whole country.Wave and solar power are not as efficient as many think unfortunately.The sun is not penetrating enough for long enough in the northern hemisphere,generally speaking and wind turbines obviuosly depend on windy conditions.In the light of revelations that a lot of our supposed recycled rubbish is shipped off to China to be land filled I think the debate about the merits of recycling etc.and the truth about what these'green taxes' will be spent on nedds to be out in the open.

Keith For starters, how about renewable energy? Apart from harnessing the power of wind and waves, the government and/or business could do more to turn our waste into power.

Can you imagine for a moment the logistical nightmare around arranging the distribution of goods that had to be delivered around the vagaries of local authority or TFL restrictions? Imagine if there were 20 delivery points across London. We would have goods vehicles criss-crossing London and never getting to where they needed to be, on time. We would either never get anything delivered throughout the day or we would be taking in deliveries right throughout the night.

Where is it going you ask; It is going on their inflation proof indexed link pensions, subsidised travel and HOUSE OF COMMONS restaurant food and drink. Throw in allowances for second homes, families masquerading as office staff (and claiming the allowances that come with it!)nice little earner that.Not forgetting when they are eventually thrown out, a nice lump sum to help them on the way. Sod the pensioners and those on low incomes. Any New Labour supporters (Mr Hughes)care to justify this nose in the trough attitude of Blair and his cronies? Someones got to pay for it, yes we are the mugs.

Sarah,In answer to your question on the beer truck and the parking tickets, companies now build in the price of the ticket to the job as does my firm, so it is you the public that are paying for it plus the congestion charge and any other thing the government and local councils can think of. This applies to all the supermarkets and other businesses that use cars vans or lorries to deliver your goods, funny though you never see a council vehicle get a ticket?

I think the phrase is hypothecation. This means that the revenue from a particular tax must be spent on specific things. As far as I am aware no direct hypothecation is proposed for many of the green taxes. The Lib Dems are not suggesting that extra spending will be made as a result of green taxes but that income tax would be cut but I don't think many people actually believe that they would resist the temptation to spend the extra money in the unlikely event they were elected.Notionally the parking revenue surplus should be spent on transport items but I believe what happens is that if there is a surplus available the money for transport from elsewhere in the budget is cut. In other words it is just an accounting sleigh of hand and parking revenue goes into the general taxation pot.

... as an aside - I have found myself enroute to Kingston across Richmond Bridge at a similar time early morning, recently.  Each time there has been a delivery truck on Richmond Bridge delivering to the Pub - and each time the same traffic warden has been there booking the delivery truck!  The driver delivers early - so why on earth can't he be told to deliver before a certain time and be allowed to buy a permit for say, 30 minutes, to complete the transaction?

Keith - I expect we all remember the Richmond Council clamp down on 4x4s and big cars, interestingly "Private Eye" showed what a load of rubbish the Council's figures are. The article points out that Richmond is way down the line for CO2 emissions in London Boroughs and that thousands of vehicles from outside the borough pass through on the main roads the Sth. Circ. and A3, on top of that  only a third of borough residents are in CPZs which will not affect the wealthiest who will probably have their own off-street parking anyway! And the point of parking schemes is so that residents can leave cars at home and travel on public transport. As for the Lib-Dems maths their anuual percapita UK emissions are out by a factor of a million tonnes. So to me and the rest of the cynics it seems that this is all just a way of extorting even more money from the poor benighted motorist, but of course I could be wrong.

Try the last labour administration, they had over 30 years to addresss your problems, but were too busy getting their noses in the trough, and looking after their mates. Ask Vanesssa about the fiasco at the hounslow central planning committee, they couldn't plan a p**s up in a brewery.They had to pay for an independent consultant (I never did find out how much she cost the taxpayer, any thoughts ex councillor Hughes?)to find out what the hell had been going on.........makes you think dunnit!
