Step forward Norman Lamb M.P. - he has asked why Lord Watson (arson) Lord Archer (perjury and perverting the course of justice) are not being stripped of their peerages and why they are allowed to play a part in running the country. There has been a lot of waffling about no rules existing which allow this, so we can only hope Mr. Lamb's pleas to the Leader of the Commons to change these silly and unfair rules bear fruit. Also while he's about it shall we add "Dame" Shirl and Mark Thatcher to the list?

Do we have to be so silly over typos?"Oh dear, oh dear - it seems Vanessa has missed the point again!  I was of course jesting at the possibility that perhaps the difference in Nazeem and Archer's social standing could possibly play a part?!! And forgive me for not thinking this thread wasn't  started in 'silly mode' when I read "that double dyed, total scumbag Jeffrey Archer"  Serious stuff eh?However, good on David, Sarah, Andrew and John for raising the tone of the thread with some very interesting comment and facts. It certainly makes me think that to speak properly is a better option than to be misunderstood and seen to be "in a glass house and all that"

Nazeem's treatment can also be contrasted with that of Lord Watson, former Labour Peer and Scottish minister, who came out of jail last May after serving time for arson and was back in the House claiming expenses within 3 weeks of his release. Even more stomach churning was the fact that he was welcomed back to the Lords by Labour Peers George Foulkes and Martin O'Neill. (See Scotsman 16th June 2006 for further details)

I'm not sure this is about the crime itself so much as the fact that they have both committed one and done time, I don't think you could have the criteria of what crime a person has committed and the severity of that before stripping them of the honour awarded. Funnily enough The Mirror has posed the same question today and also points out that Archer is in the position of still taking part in making the laws the rest of us have to live with and let's be honest he isn't fit to lick our boots under these circumstances - if that isn't a bloody cheek I don't know what is, the journalist refers to him as the "Louse of Lords", hear, hear!

Well VanessaAlthough I agree with you (surprise surprise) in some respects. Think about what that moron Nazeem Hamed said when he was released (early!) from a prison sentence for almost killing a young man by reckless driving, that left him crippled and in constant pain for the rest of his lifeJustice was not served for this young man was it?What did this useless waste of space have to say to the waiting press, "no one was killed were they" He should have got at least the same sentence as Archer had! No remorse no words of sorrow.Archer on the other hand, although a moron, has not killed anyone has he?

Mmmm - mea culpa noted but it also make me think that perhaps Archer kept his 'going' simply because he can actually speak proper!
