Monday: Brentford & Chiswick history society meeting

""The Changing face of Brentford.Brentford and Chiswick Local History SocietyAn illustrated talk by Peter and Carolyn Hammond to mark the publication of their new book of photographs, which will be on sale at our bookstall.All the Society's talks take place on the third Monday of the month at the Chiswick Memorial Club, Afton House, Bourne Place, Chiswick W4, starting at 7.30pm. The meeting in Chiswick was very well attended..indeed the Ballroom where it was held was packed..hardly a spare seat in the house to hear Peter and Carolyn Hammond give an illustrated talk about their new book.The talk..and the first page of the book started at Kew Bridge!..as it was in the early 1900's after Edward VII had opened it:ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooThere were facts and figures galore. I loved the story of how Brentford Market started. Our local nurserymen used to take their produce up to Covent Garden in the 1880's/1890's.One day a chap with his loaded horse and cart parked outside the EXPRESS TAVERN for a drink..and when he came out someone wanted to buy one of the cauliflowers he had on board!! This custom developed..more selling outside the pub..more horse and carts and then traffic jams..and then the Brentford Market site was built to cater for this developement.Interesting to hear that Holland Gardens was named after Frank...and you know who he was don't you!!?And,really!!, Queen Victoria travelled down Brentford High Street on her wedding day!! (on her way to Windsor apparently)(and yes we posted a picture of that event some many months back). Will FORUM SEARCH bring it back? Good to see you at the meeting Nigel with your group..and as always you contributed your personal knowledge and ideas during the open session..and for that Brentfordians should be proud of you!!
